The 63 buses of this series were ordered by STIB at the end of the 1960s to replace the trams on lines 28, 63 and 76. This model represents a marked improvement over its predecessors, especially in passenger comfort and accessibility. It had larger doors, the floor in the front was lower and more accessible, it had large windows and semi-pneumatic suspension. The distinct shape of its bodywork was copied – albeit with small adjustments – on all of STIB’s buses put in service between 1972 and 1975, a total of 265 vehicles.
